BIOGRAPHY
GAKUTO CHIBA
Born in 1998, Gakuto Chiba started learning Japanese folk songs at the age of five with Kozan Kanno. He then got interested into Tsugaru shamisen, Japanese traditional musical instrument for folk songs, and started learning it at the age of six. From 2011 to 2014, he won numerous 1st place awards as a performer in the national Tsugaru shamisen competition. This marked the start of his full-fledged musical career. Upon entering university, he moved from Hokkaido to Tokyo. At the age of 20, he released his first album titled "誠音 -MAKOTO-" featuring renditions of the five major folk songs from the Tsugaru region played on the shamisen. Currently, he is responsible for providing music at schools, public halls, and the IKKO's dinner show tour. Concurrently, he specializes in comparative musicology and ethnomusicology, conducting research on the universality and diversity of intercultural music by combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. Gakuto Chiba is a leader who, as a performer and researcher, disseminates the traditional Japanese instrument 'Tsugaru Shamisen' to the world.
